New feature in “Rajmargyatra” app allows citizens to report unauthorised activities on NHs, bolstering safety measures.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced proactive measures to address ribbon development, unauthorised parking, and encroachments along National Highways (NHs). In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed the Ministry’s efforts in collaboration with State Governments to identify and remove encroachments on NH rights of way.
A significant step includes the introduction of a new feature in the “Rajmargyatra” mobile application, empowering citizens to report unauthorised occupations on National Highways. This initiative not only enables users to flag such incidents but also aims to enhance safety measures along NHs.
To alleviate congestion in built-up areas, the Ministry is constructing bypasses, elevated roads, flyovers, underpasses, and foot over bridges, depending on traffic volume, techno-economic feasibility, land availability, and funding priorities. New bypasses and highways are being developed as access-controlled facilities to prevent future ribbon development.
A special drive has been launched to remove encroachments from NHs, including those in Uttarakhand. The Ministry has requested all state governments to instruct local revenue and police authorities to support Highway Administrations under the Control of National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002, in removing unauthorised occupations on NHs.
