In a significant development, Kolkata airport is poised to increase its flight handling capacity by almost 30 percent with the operationalisation of four new taxiways on December 28. These new taxiways, including Taxiway F, will elevate the maximum flight movements per hour from the existing 35 to an impressive 45.
Taxiway F, connecting the northern end of the primary runway, enables departing flights to initiate take-off immediately upon entering the runway, saving crucial time. Additionally, three rapid exit taxiways (RETs) will reduce landing time by nearly 15 seconds, facilitating 7 to 10 more flights to land or take off every hour.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has approved the new taxiways, pending inclusion in the Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) to inform global airlines and pilots about the operational changes. This capacity enhancement will enable Kolkata airport to offer more slots during peak hours, meeting the rising demand from airlines.
