In a collaborative effort, Qatar Airways Cargo and Animal Defenders International (ADI) have undertaken a vital mission to save Ruben, widely recognised as the “world’s loneliest lion.” After enduring five years of isolation in an abandoned Armenian zoo, Ruben’s life is being transformed through a remarkable journey of rehabilitation at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary in Free State, South Africa.
Ruben’s plight began when he was left behind as the private zoo in Armenia shut down. Confined to a small concrete cell without contact with other lions, his future seemed uncertain as ADI struggled to find an appropriate flight out of Armenia.
Qatar Airways Cargo orchestrated a 5,200-mile journey for the 15-year-old lion, providing him with the opportunity to rediscover his voice and confidence as he roams freely at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. Ruben’s resilience and remarkable recovery offer hope after years of captivity.
Qatar Airways Cargo’s commitment to preserving wildlife aligns with their WeQare initiative: “Rewild the Planet,” dedicated to returning wild animals to their natural habitat.
