Wabtec’s India plant to export Evolution Series locomotives globally, boosting Make in India.
Wabtec Locomotive, a joint venture between Indian Railways and Wabtec, is set to expand its Marhowra plant’s capabilities to export locomotives globally. For the first time, the plant will supply Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives to Africa and other international markets. These high-performance locomotives feature a 4,500 HP Evolution Series engine known for its fuel efficiency and reliability in extreme conditions.
Starting in 2025, this initiative aligns with India’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” goals, positioning the country as a global locomotive manufacturing hub. The project will also promote local job creation and expand India’s supplier network, significantly benefiting the economy.
The Marhowra plant, established in 2018, has already delivered 650 locomotives to Indian Railways and employs around 600 people. The collaboration between Wabtec and Indian Railways continues to enhance the plant’s global competitiveness and long-term export potential.
