Vizag Port upgrades its maritime fleet with new 60-tonne tugs from HSL to improve berthing safety and ship turnaround.

Visakhapatnam Port Authority has taken a significant step to modernise its marine support fleet by commissioning a new generation of high-powered tugs. Hindustan Shipyard, a state-owned defence enterprise, celebrated two milestones by laying the keel for a 60-tonne bollard pull tug and signing a contract for a second vessel of the same class.
These domestically built vessels are designed to manage the increasing size of ships calling at Indian ports. With a length of 32.5 metres, the tugs provide the agility and force required for precise manoeuvring during berthing and unberthing in confined waters or poor weather.
Key Highlights:
- Operational Efficiency: The high-powered tugs are vital for handling bulk commodities and containers, ensuring smooth vessel turnaround and reducing delays.
- Strategic Growth: Port Chairperson Madhaiyaan Angamuthu stated that investing in such assets is essential for safety as cargo volumes continue to rise.
- Domestic Capability: Shipyard Chairman Girideep Singh noted that the project reinforces local engineering and shipbuilding skills, supported by technology partners Vedam and Solas Marine.
Announced on 24 December 2025, this initiative aligns with national goals to modernise infrastructure and boost local manufacturing. Beyond port operations, the project is expected to create jobs and solidify Visakhapatnam as a premier maritime hub on the east coast.
