The Purple Line Metro Corridor project in Kolkata, connecting Joka to Esplanade, is advancing steadily. The recent inauguration of the Joka–Taratala segment in December 2022 and the near-completion of Majherhat Metro station have set the stage for full-scale construction of the Majerhat to Esplanade stretch, targeted for completion within 48 months.
This expansion holds exciting prospects, including the construction of the underground Victoria Metro station next to the iconic Victoria Memorial Hall.
The underground Victoria Station will be one of four on the Purple Line, providing convenient access to cultural landmarks like the M.P. Birla Planetarium, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Brigade Parade Ground. Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL), the project’s executing agency, has initiated preparations for Victoria Station, involving the temporary dismantling of the Fountain of Joy at Kolkata Maidan and careful tree transplantation.
Measures to mitigate pollution and vibration impact have also been put in place, ensuring the preservation of the area’s aesthetic appeal throughout construction.
