The US greenlights $1.1 billion in equipment and support for India’s MH-60R Seahawk helicopters.
The US government has approved a $1.1 billion package of equipment and follow-on support for India’s MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. This includes advanced systems like joint tactical radios, infrared systems, external fuel tanks, and identification friend or foe equipment, alongside training and logistical services.
India commissioned its first squadron of six submarine-hunting MH-60R Seahawks in March at INS Garuda, Kochi. Armed with Hellfire missiles, MK-54 torpedoes, and precision rockets, these helicopters are critical assets for the Navy. Under a $2.13 billion deal signed in 2020, all 24 Seahawks are expected to be delivered by 2025.
The Biden administration emphasised that this sale aligns with US foreign policy and enhances India’s defense capabilities to address regional threats without disrupting military balance. This move also strengthens the Indo-US strategic partnership and supports stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
