On Monday, August 15, in New Delhi, a high-level discussion was held between Union Ministers of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwinin Vaishnaw. Mansukh Mandaviya served as a guest.
The Make in India program’s container production ecosystem was the subject of the meeting, which was conducted to discuss and facilitate.
According to a release from the Ports, Shipping and Waterways Ministry, “the high-powered meeting deliberated several elements in this regard in an effort to make India ‘Atmanirbhar’ in its requirement for containers. CONCOR will collaborate closely with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) on cluster base manufacturing.
The meeting also covered the possibility of domestic cargo transit using India’s extensive network of interior waterways if Make in India containers are made available. The government stated that various strategies and tools for supporting Indian container producers were also reviewed.
The statement said, “In the meeting, the ministers also reviewed the potential for containerized transportation of bulk cargoes, including cement, foodgrains, fertilisers, etc., through inland and coastal waterways.” Due to the use of a more affordable, environmentally friendly, and convenient means of transportation, this will help to lower the cost of logistics and handling fees.
Earlier, a group made up of the Joint Secretaries for Ports, Customs, Logistics, and Steel, as well as representatives from CONCOR and NICDC, was established to evaluate the demand for containers in domestic commerce, EXIM trade, and the challenges faced in domestic container manufacture.
Furthermore, the MoPSW spoke with CONCOR, the Association of Container Train Operators (ACTO), steel production firms, container makers, and the Container Shipping Line Association representatives (CSLA). Container accessibility and shipboard space are steadily improving in the EXIM sector. CONCOR needs to place about 50,000 containers in the domestic market during the next three years.
The purpose of the conference was to build an ecosystem to support local producers in producing Make in India containers, ultimately assisting our trading community in the EXIM sector and supporting the Prime Minister in achieving his goal of making India a USD 5 trillion economy.
