Sindi’s Multimodal Logistics Park, inaugurated before poll code of conduct, awaits operational launch post-election.
The Sindi Multimodal Logistics Park (MMLP), a flagship project of Union Minister for Highways Nitin Gadkari, is poised to commence operations after the upcoming elections, following a trial run on March 14, just prior to the enforcement of the poll code of conduct. With commercial formalities completed, sources indicate that operations are slated to commence by mid-June.
Expected to witness around 10 container trains per month starting from June, operators are targeting business expansion into Bangladesh. Initial outbound consignments include cotton, auto parts, tractors, and yarn, with reciprocation from Bangladesh anticipated.
The facility aims to amplify logistics activities in the region by an estimated 20 percent. Currently, container depots in Nagpur are managed by Concor, DLI, and the Adani Group. The Sindi MMLP, upon operation, will mark the fourth such depot in the area.
The logistics route from Nagpur to Bangladesh via Haldia, utilising river transport, is projected to significantly reduce transit time to just over a week compared to the 20-25 days required by road or sea routes. This development is expected to mitigate congestion issues often encountered at Indo-Bangladesh land routes and circumvent lengthy detours via Colombo or Singapore, reducing both freight costs and delivery timelines.
NHLM has partnered with Delta Bulk Shipping Corporation to realise the project. Efforts to diversify cargo, including exploring avenues such as orange exports, are underway, albeit hindered by high duty rates impeding Nagpur orange exports. Additionally, measures to redirect road-bound cargo to the MMLP are being explored, considering recent congestion reductions in the area.
