MoPSW Secretary Vijay Kumar launches ₹54.27cr Chennai Port upgrades, featuring a new terminal and indigenous vessel tracking.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Vijay Kumar, conducted a comprehensive performance assessment at the Chennai Port Authority. During the visit, a suite of infrastructure enhancements totalling ₹54.27 crore was officially launched to modernise operations and improve passenger services.
Several completed projects were commissioned to bolster safety and connectivity:
- Passenger Connectivity: A new terminal dedicated to Andaman and Nicobar travellers was opened, following an investment of ₹29.8 crore.
- Navigational Technology: An indigenous Vessel Traffic Monitoring System, costing ₹22.58 crore, was activated to manage maritime traffic more effectively.
- Safety Equipment: Additional navigational aids and channel buoys were installed at a cost of ₹0.39 crore.
Work commenced on the ₹1.5 crore refurbishment of Port Gate 2, aimed at streamlining vehicular movement and tightening security protocols. During a high-level briefing with Chairperson Sunil Paliwal and senior management, the Secretary stressed that these upgrades are essential components of the “Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.”
The visit concluded with a site inspection of the various terminals to evaluate current operational hurdles and identify further avenues for commercial expansion at the facility.
