VOC Port handles its longest container vessel yet, the MSC Michaela, following key infrastructure upgrades.

The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority in Tuticorin reached a significant operational peak on 21 December 2025 by successfully berthing the M.V. MSC Michaela. At 304 metres in length and featuring a beam of 40 metres, this is officially the longest container ship and the highest-capacity vessel ever to dock at the facility. Arriving at the Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminal, the ship marks a major advancement in the maritime capabilities of South India.
The vessel, which arrived from the Port of Colón in Panama before heading to Colombo, Sri Lanka, managed a total of 3,977 TEUs during its call. The cargo breakdown included 2,676 TEUs for import, 1,104 TEUs for export, and additional units for transhipment and restowage operations. This achievement illustrates the port’s rapid evolution from handling vessels under 300 metres just three years ago to managing world-class, high-capacity carriers.
Sushant Kumar Purohit, Chairperson of the port authority, noted on 23 December 2025 that this record-breaking event was made possible through extensive infrastructure investment. Critical upgrades included deepening the maximum draft to 14.20 metres, expanding the basin’s turning circle to 550 metres, and introducing a powerful 60-tonne bollard pull tug to assist with large-scale manoeuvres.
Current data highlights the port’s growing influence, with container volumes rising by over 8 percent in the financial year up to November 2025 compared to the previous period. With the Outer Harbour project on the horizon, the facility is poised to further cement its status as a primary gateway for international trade and sophisticated supply chain logistics.
