Prime Minister Modi dedicates Vizhinjam International Seaport to the nation, marking a milestone in India’s maritime growth.

In a significant move to enhance India’s maritime infrastructure, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today dedicated the ₹8,800 crore Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Kerala. The event, held in Thiruvananthapuram, marks a pivotal step toward transforming India’s logistics and global trade capabilities.
This state-of-the-art seaport, developed under the Sagarmala Project, will boost transshipment capacity, reducing India’s reliance on foreign ports for cargo handling. The port’s strategic location, deep draft of 20 meters, and proximity to major international trade routes are expected to elevate India’s maritime presence globally. Prime Minister Modi stressed that this initiative is a key component of the government’s vision for a developed India, with Kerala positioned as a hub for international trade.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize India’s port infrastructure, citing improvements under the PM-Gatishakti scheme, which integrates waterways, railways, highways, and airways for seamless connectivity. He emphasized that this transformation is vital for enhancing efficiency and boosting India’s logistics sector.
PM Modi recognized the transformative role of the private sector in upgrading India’s ports, with significant investments under Public-Private Partnerships (PPP). He expressed confidence that the new Vizhinjam port will become a cornerstone in India’s journey towards becoming a global maritime power.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister noted the port’s potential to generate new employment opportunities, strengthen Kerala’s economy, and integrate the state’s resources into the broader national development framework. As part of the ceremony, he also paid tribute to the legacy of Adi Shankaracharya on his birth anniversary, drawing parallels between spiritual growth and India’s emerging maritime strength.
The Vizhinjam seaport is poised to be a critical asset in India’s long-term strategy to enhance logistics and trade capabilities, ensuring smoother cargo flows, reduced port turnaround times, and better economic returns for Kerala and the nation as a whole.
