NHAI’s latest sustainability report outlines major strides in green construction, circular economy, and carbon reduction.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has released its second Sustainability Report for FY 2023-24, showcasing key environment-focused initiatives and its commitment to ESG principles. Despite a 20% increase in highway construction, NHAI successfully reduced GHG emissions intensity from 1.0 to 0.8 MTCO2e/km, reflecting a positive decoupling of emissions from growth.
In FY 2023-24, NHAI utilised over 631 lakh metric tonnes of recycled materials such as plastic waste, fly ash, and reclaimed asphalt, reinforcing its focus on circular economy practices. The authority planted 56 lakh saplings in FY 2023-24 and 67.47 lakh in FY 2024-25, taking the total to over 4.69 crore under its Green Highways Policy.
Notably, 467 water bodies were developed under the Amrit Sarovar Mission, providing soil for construction and saving ₹16,690 crore. Additionally, the AI-powered Data Lake 3.0 helped resolve 155 claims, saving ₹25,680 crore, while FASTag reached 98.5% adoption, cutting emissions at tolls.
