Mormugao becomes India’s first port to implement Green Ship Incentives on the ESI platform.
Mormugao Port Authority has achieved global recognition as an incentive provider on the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) platform, endorsed by the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH). This milestone underscores the port’s commitment to promoting eco-friendly practices among seagoing vessels.
Mormugao is the first port in India to introduce Green Ship Incentives through the ESI, which is part of a broader initiative to minimise air emissions in shipping. Launched in October 2023, the “Harit Shrey” scheme offers port fee discounts based on the ESI ratings of commercial ships, incentivising those with higher environmental performance.
Since its implementation, numerous vessels have benefited from the program, reinforcing the port’s focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The port authority has also submitted the scheme for consideration in the IAPH Sustainability Awards, showcasing its commitment to sustainable maritime operations. This recognition positions Mormugao as a leader in advancing green shipping initiatives in Asia, alongside Japan and Oman.
