India handled 17 million TEUs against China’s 245 million in 2020. The nation currently lacks world-class mega-port and terminal infrastructure to handle ultra-large vessels. This is about to change as the Maritime India Vision 2030 foresees up to ₹1,25,000 crores in investment in initiatives to enhance the current capacity, develop advanced mega ports and transhipment hubs, and modernise the existing infrastructure at Indian ports.
Two upcoming ports at Vadhavan (Maharashtra) and Vizhinjam (Kerala) experience natural drafts above 18m that can support ultra-large container and cargo ships’ movement. This development is bound to put India on the global map for container and cargo handling capacity.
