World’s largest green ammonia complex starts in Kakinada; ₹15,600-crore project targets 2027 for first zero-carbon exports.

In a recent development, the port city of Kakinada marked a major industrial milestone with the equipment installation ceremony for a ₹15,600-crore green ammonia facility. This project, involving a total investment of $10 billion, repurposes an existing industrial site to create the world’s largest complex for zero-carbon maritime fuel. Strategically located to utilise Kakinada’s coastal infrastructure, the hub is designed to decarbonise global shipping by providing a sustainable alternative to heavy fuel oils.
The initiative is bolstered by a logistics partnership with DP World to manage supply chains and port-based export infrastructure. With an eventual annual capacity of 1.5 million tonnes, the project follows a phased timeline: an initial 0.5 million tonnes by mid-2027, scaling to 1 million tonnes by 2028, and reaching full capacity by 2030. Binding agreements are already in place to ship 500,000 tonnes annually to Germany via Uniper starting in 2028, with additional exports planned for Japan and Singapore. Powered by a 7.5 GW renewable energy network, the project is expected to create 8,000 jobs during construction and drive high-skill employment in the maritime logistics and storage sectors.
