JSW Infrastructure clinches the Netaji Subhas Dock container terminal project with a ₹4,678/TEU bid, outpacing Adani Ports.

JSW Infrastructure Ltd is set to secure a major container terminal project at Netaji Subhas Dock (NSD), part of the Kolkata Dock System (KDS), with a proposed investment of ₹832 crore. The company emerged as the highest bidder, quoting a royalty of ₹4,678 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU), edging out rival Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd, which offered ₹4,020 per TEU.
This 5 lakh TEU capacity terminal will mark JSW Infra’s first venture at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (Kolkata Port) on India’s eastern seaboard. According to sources, other technically qualified contenders—DP World, Century Ports, and Navayuga Engineering Co—opted not to submit financial bids.
The 30-year contract involves the reconstruction of berth 8 and the mechanisation of berths 7 and 8, including the installation of a rail-mounted quay crane (RMQC) to enhance container handling efficiency. A 25-acre backup area will also be developed to support terminal operations.
Port contracts at major ports are awarded based on the highest royalty per tonne (or TEU) quoted, with the winning bidder gaining long-term operating rights. JSW Infra’s success in Kolkata adds to its growing container handling portfolio, following its operational terminal at New Mangalore Port.
In FY 2024–25, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port handled a total of 805,000 TEUs—Kolkata Dock System managed 620,000 TEUs, while Haldia Dock Complex contributed 185,000 TEUs. The NSD terminal is expected to significantly boost capacity and efficiency on the eastern maritime corridor.
