India’s largest container port, JNPA, celebrated 36 years with key dignitaries and industry leaders at its Foundation Day.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) commemorated its 36th Foundation Day on May 26, 2025, celebrating its journey as India’s largest container port. The event, held in Mumbai, brought together top officials and industry leaders to reflect on JNPA’s achievements and its pivotal role in India’s maritime sector.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal lauded JNPA’s evolution into a vital engine of national growth, crediting its success to strong leadership, innovation, and effective public-private partnerships. He emphasised the port’s alignment with the ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Local to Global’ visions and highlighted upcoming projects like the Vadhvan Port, which aims to position India among the top 10 global maritime hubs.

Minister of State Shri Shantanu Thakur noted the port’s significance in supporting India’s economic ascent, while Secretary T K Ramachandran praised JNPA’s strides in digitalisation, sustainability, and port-led industrialisation.
Chairperson Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh reflected on the port’s responsibility to adapt to evolving trade dynamics. Two MoUs under the Vadhvan Port Skilling Program were also signed—one with Sahyadri Farms to upskill rural communities, and another with Rural Enhancers Projects for developing cargo handling and marine infrastructure.
The event featured the release of a coffee table book chronicling JNPA’s 36-year journey, a corporate film, and an award ceremony honoring exceptional contributions across terminals, shipping lines, and consignees. Recognitions were presented to industry players such as BMCT, APMT, Maersk, MSC, Allcargo, LG Electronics, and Bajaj Auto for excellence in traffic, sustainability, and productivity.
As JNPA advances with expansion and smart port initiatives, it remains a cornerstone of India’s global trade vision.
