JNPA Chairperson reveals expansive development plans, including the port’s expansion and creation of job opportunities in Palghar.
Unmesh Wagh, the Chairperson of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), declared Palghar as Maharashtra’s future, announcing the initiation of port expansion slated to commence by April 2025 and conclude by 2029. This endeavour is projected to generate a million direct and indirect jobs over the next decade, with around 10 lakh positions anticipated in the service sector, including 5 lakh during the construction phase.
Efforts are underway to expedite the project, aiming to complete it ahead of the estimated ten-year timeframe. Wagh underscores the port’s pivotal role in bolstering India’s industrial development and trade, emphasising the necessity of constructing a port at Vadhavan to meet future demands. Highlighting the advantages of Vadhavan’s natural depth, he envisions accommodating larger vessels, reducing reliance on international ports like Singapore and Colombo.
Additionally, plans include skill training for locals, healthcare infrastructure development, and environmental conservation initiatives. JNPA also proposes an innovative integrated food storage facility and an independent water supply system to support the expansion and future staff colony.
