IWAI received recognition for Jal Marg Vikas Project at ET Edge SCM Fest 2025 for boosting river-based infrastructure.

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), operating under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, was awarded the ‘Sankalp se Siddhi Infrastructure Honour’ during the ET Edge Supply Chain Management Fest 2025, held on June 26-27 in New Delhi. The award acknowledges the remarkable progress of the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP), which aims to enhance the capacity of National Waterway-1 (NW-1) along the Ganga River.
The project spans a 1,390 km stretch from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to Haldia in West Bengal, covering parts of Bihar and Jharkhand. With support from the World Bank, IWAI is developing multi-modal and inter-modal terminals, navigational locks, community jetties, and maintaining fairways to promote smoother cargo and passenger movement.
Cargo traffic on NW-1 has surged from 5 MMT to over 16 MMT annually. Initiatives like Jalvahak cargo services and the Ganga Vilas cruise are unlocking new potential in both freight and tourism. IWAI also plans to build cruise terminals, ship repair hubs, and a freight village to further boost inland water transport.
