Indian airports are in for a significant upgrade in the next few years. The Airports Authority of India (AAI), coupled with many private airport operators and developers, is targeting a capital investment of around ₹98,000 crores by 2025. The plan includes building greenfield airports with new terminals, expanding and upgrading the existing ones, and revamping the runways.
AAI will incur up to ₹25,000 crores, and private players will pump in the rest. The government aims to develop 100 new airports by 2024 under the Regional Connectivity Scheme – Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (RCS-UDAN). New airports will be built in various cities, including Navi Mumbai; Jewar (Noida); Vijayapura, Shivamogga, and Hassan in Karnataka; Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh; and Hirasar and Dholera in Gujarat.
Existing airports at New Delhi, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, and Mangaluru will be eligible for a revamp as per the plan.
