India, Japan, and Singapore sign a historic agreement to export green ammonia, marking India’s rise in global green energy.
The Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, chaired the signing ceremony of a landmark project offtake agreement for exporting green ammonia from India to Japan. This collaboration, involving India, Japan, and Singapore, represents a significant milestone in advancing the global green energy landscape.
The Heads of Terms (HoT) agreement was signed by Sembcorp Industries, Sojitz Corporation, Kyushu Electric Power Co., and NYK Line. It is the first-ever cross-border partnership for the supply of green ammonia from India to Japan, highlighting India’s emerging leadership in green hydrogen and ammonia production.
Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries will oversee green ammonia production in India, utilising renewable energy sources. Kyushu Electric Power Co. plans to integrate this green ammonia into its energy mix, reducing coal consumption at thermal power plants in Japan. Sojitz Corporation will act as the business intermediary, while NYK Line will handle maritime transportation from India to Japan.
Addressing the event, Pralhad Joshi remarked, “Today marks a historic moment as we sign the first agreement to supply green ammonia from India to Japan. This partnership will establish a strong supply chain and pave the way for future collaborations in green energy.”
The minister highlighted India’s rapid progress in green hydrogen and renewable energy under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He emphasised India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in this field by leveraging partnerships, enhancing regulatory frameworks, and making substantial investments.
Joshi also announced ongoing tenders for 7.5 lakh TPA of green ammonia, with additional tenders for 4.5 lakh TPA capacity underway, underscoring India’s ambition to scale up green energy production.
The agreement reflects India’s growing influence in the global green energy market and showcases the nation’s dedication to sustainable development and energy independence. The collaboration with Japan signals a new chapter in India’s journey towards a greener future.
