DG Shipping raises maritime security to MARSEC Level 2 for Indian ports, terminals, and vessels, following the ISPS Code. This action comes amid ongoing India-Pakistan tensions.

In response to the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) has elevated maritime security to “MARSEC Level 2” for Indian ports, terminals, and Indian-flagged vessels. This directive, falling under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, aims to bolster security measures as outlined by the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. The ISPS Code, a crucial part of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention established by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) after the 9/11 attacks, defines security levels to ensure the safe operation of ships and port facilities across various threat scenarios. MARSEC Level 2 signifies heightened security, requiring the implementation of additional protective measures based on credible threat information. This move follows India’s earlier decision to prohibit Pakistani-flagged vessels from entering Indian ports. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently reviewed key maritime projects and instructed officials to maintain normal freight transportation operations.
