Union Minister Sonowal unveils an ₹80 lakh crore maritime roadmap and a 1.5 crore job vision ahead of India Maritime Week 2025.

India is setting sail on an ambitious maritime journey. Addressing a packed press conference at the NESCO Exhibition Centre, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, unveiled a bold vision of ₹80 lakh crore investment and the creation of 1.5 crore jobs by 2047. The announcement came ahead of India Maritime Week 2025, scheduled from 27 to 31 October in Mumbai.
“India’s maritime journey is entering a new chapter under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Shri Sonowal said. “We are working to transform our ports, shipping, and logistics ecosystem into one that is resilient, sustainable, and future-ready.”
He emphasised that the maritime roadmap aligns with the government’s vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 and includes a US$1 trillion investment opportunity. “IMW 2025 will be a platform where ideas can translate into projects and commitments into partnerships. India stands ready to collaborate and lead towards a maritime future that is prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive,” he added.
The government’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision targets a future where India leads the global maritime sector. Key milestones include ₹80 lakh crore of investments, 1.5 crore maritime jobs, and all 12 major ports achieving carbon neutrality by 2047. Green energy transition targets for 2035 are already underway.
The transformation is visible. Cargo movement on inland waterways has grown eightfold since 2014, port turnaround time has fallen by 60%, and ₹5.5 lakh crore worth of Sagarmala Programme projects are reshaping coastal logistics. India now supplies 12% of the world’s seafarers, reinforcing its global maritime leadership.
India Maritime Week 2025 will see over 1 lakh delegates and 500 exhibitors from more than 100 countries, including ministerial delegations from Singapore, the UAE, South Korea, Japan, and Denmark. Leading international organisations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) will participate alongside major Indian states and industry giants like Adani Ports and Logistics, Cochin Shipyard, and Paradip Port Authority.
India Maritime Week, the flagship event of Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, will showcase cutting-edge advancements in maritime technology, logistics, and sustainability. It aims to catalyse global partnerships and investments that can anchor India’s leadership in the blue economy.
This bold vision, backed by strategic action, is poised to make India a maritime powerhouse by 2047, blending prosperity, sustainability, and heritage into a transformative growth story.
