GRSE inks $45 million contract with Germany’s Carsten Rehder for four multi-purpose vessels, to be delivered in 33 months.
Defence PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has signed a significant agreement with Germany-based Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG to construct and deliver four multi-purpose vessels at an estimated cost of $45 million. GRSE announced that the contract, which includes an option to build an additional four ships, will be executed within 33 months.
The vessels, designed for diverse maritime functions, will measure 120 metres in length and 17 metres in width, with a maximum draft of 6.75 metres. Each ship will have a carrying capacity of 7,500 metric tonnes and feature a single cargo hold for bulk, general, and project cargoes. Notably, these ships are specially designed to transport multiple large windmill blades on deck and containers on hatch covers.
GRSE’s Director (Shipbuilding) Shantanu Bose, a retired Commodore of the Indian Navy, and Carsten Thomas Rehder, Managing Director of Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG, signed the contract on Saturday. Commodore PR Hari, Indian Navy (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director of GRSE, along with other officials, attended the signing ceremony.
This contract underscores the government’s push for defence exports, which have reached an unprecedented ₹21,000 crore. To date, GRSE has built over 790 platforms, including 109 warships for the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and allied nations, making it the Indian shipyard with the highest number of warship deliveries.
