General Óptica launches a new automated warehouse to support its growth plans.
General Óptica, a leader in Spain’s optical market and operating in Portugal as Mais Optica, has opened a state-of-the-art logistics center near Madrid, designed by Mecalux. This new facility, spanning 2,000 m², is set to support the company’s expansion by shipping an average of 4,000 orders daily across the Iberian Peninsula, serving its 321 eyewear shops.
Located in San Fernando de Henares, the warehouse can manage up to 100,000 eyeglass frames, accommodating projected growth for the next decade. The facility includes 300 m² of office space and utilises advanced storage solutions such as an automated box conveyor system, pallet racking, and picking shelves provided by Mecalux.
Juan González, Logistics and Transport Manager at General Óptica, highlighted the facility’s role in distributing products to suppliers, physical stores, and online customers, as well as managing returns. “Our warehouse needed automation to enhance efficiency and minimise errors in picking and shipping,” González explained. The center handles 12,000 operations daily using a put-to-light system for presorting products into boxes before transport to the consolidation area.
General Óptica praised Mecalux for its crucial role in the project, stating, “Mecalux’s expertise and range of intralogistics solutions have been integral to our success.” The company has seen continuous growth over the past 15 years and is poised for further expansion with this new logistics center.
