FCI enhances food grain storage with six new silos, boosting preservation, capacity, and supply chain efficiency.
The Food Corporation of India (FCI), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, has made significant strides in modernising India’s food grain supply chain. As part of the Department of Food and Public Distribution’s 100 Days Achievements, FCI has successfully developed several state-of-the-art silo projects under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. These projects aim to ensure efficient and sustainable storage and movement of essential commodities.
Six new silo projects are now operational across the country. Developed through Design, Build, Finance, Own & Operate (DBFOO) and Design, Build, Finance, Operate & Transfer (DBFOT) models with private investment, the silos offer 50,000 MT of storage capacity each.
Key highlights include:
- Darbhanga Silo (Bihar): Developed by M/s Adani Agri Logistics (Darbhanga), this 50,000 MT facility, operational since April 2024, includes a dedicated railway siding.
- Samastipur Silo (Bihar): Another 50,000 MT silo by M/s Adani Agri Logistics (Samastipur), completed in May 2024.
- Sahnewal Silo (Punjab): Built by M/s Leap Agri Logistics (Ludhiana), this 50,000 MT silo enhances grain procurement and storage in Punjab, operational since May 2024.
- Baroda Silo (Gujarat): Developed by M/s Leap Agri Logistics (Baroda), this 50,000 MT facility has been operational since May 2024.
- Chheheratta Silo (Punjab): Located in Amritsar, this 50,000 MT silo, by M/s NCML Chhehretta, was completed in May 2024.
- Batala Silo (Punjab): Developed by M/s NCML Batala, this 50,000 MT facility in Gurdaspur became operational in June 2024.
These projects will bolster FCI’s ability to ensure food security, offering enhanced storage capacity, better preservation, and reduced losses through efficient bulk handling, automated systems, and integrated transport links.
