TeamLease predicts 50 new e-commerce export hubs will generate 2.25-2.75 lakh jobs.
A new study by TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship reveals the Indian government’s plan to establish 50 e-commerce export hubs is set to create 2.25-2.75 lakh new jobs, significantly boosting the nation’s export capacity. This initiative is also expected to transform the logistics sector, currently growing at a 12 percent CAGR.
E-commerce has become a major job creator, generating 15-16 million jobs, including 3-4 million for women. This growth has extended beyond entry-level positions, increasing opportunities in marketing, merchandising, and management. The sector’s evolution has led to a shift towards outsourcing HR and administrative tasks, further impacting employment patterns.
The logistics industry’s growth is closely linked to e-commerce hubs, integrating advanced technologies like AI, robotics, and data analysis. This has increased demand for specialized roles in retail management, global trade, supply chain coordination, and tech-enabled trade facilitation. However, the largely unorganised logistics sector, with only 10 percent formal players and 4.5 percent skilled workforce, faces significant challenges.
Ramesh Alluri Reddy, CEO of TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, highlighted the need for a skilled workforce, citing the rapid growth of logistics apprentices from 400 in 2018-19 to over 20,000 in 2023-24. He projected a 50 percent annual increase in apprenticeships over the next three years, supported by government programs like NATS, PMKVVY, and Skill India Mission.
Dhriti Prasanna Mahanta, Vice President & Business Head, emphasised the transformative potential of the Union Budget 2024 for the logistics sector. With capital expenditure and multimodal infrastructure development, the creation of e-commerce export hubs aligns with India’s vision to become a global manufacturing leader.
