CSL partners with HD Korea, unveils ₹18,700 crore expansion plans in Kochi and Tamil Nadu.

Cochin Shipyard (CSL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) to boost India’s shipbuilding capacity under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The pact was exchanged during the maritime summit “Samudra se Samriddhi” in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, in the presence of senior ministers and industry leaders.
The collaboration aims to combine CSL’s infrastructure and expertise with HD KSOE’s global technology, enabling construction of large vessels such as Suezmax tankers, container ships, and Capesize bulk carriers. CSL’s 310-meter dry dock, inaugurated in 2024, will play a key role, with potential to deliver up to six vessels annually.
To support this, CSL will set up a Block Fabrication Facility in Kochi across 80 acres with an investment of ₹3,700 crore, creating 2,000 direct and several thousand indirect jobs. Additionally, a ₹15,000 crore greenfield shipyard is planned in Tamil Nadu, expected to generate 10,000 jobs. Both projects align with India’s Maritime Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
