CMA CGM’s potential waterway services would create new, environmentally friendly multimodal corridors for more economical cargo movement.

The third-biggest container shipping operator in the world, CMA CGM, is considering entering India’s inland canal operations, indicating a possible extension of its reach beyond maritime transportation. The French liner said that it is looking into ways to run river-based freight services and barges along the nation’s expanding inland water network.
The interest coincides with India’s increased emphasis on shipbuilding and the maritime industry. A significant order for six LNG dual-fuel container ships was placed earlier this year by CMA CGM with Cochin Shipyard(CSL). This investment is generally regarded as strengthening the group’s long-term commitment to India.
Additionally, CMA CGM emphasised Maharashtra’s Vadhavan Port’s revolutionary potential. With scale and connections comparable to top international hubs, the business sees the proposed deep-draft port as a key facilitator for India’s rise into what it refers to as the “global maritime premier league.”
CMA CGM may assist in opening new multimodal pathways for industry, providing more cost-effective and ecologically friendly cargo movement, should the company proceed with inland waterway services. Additionally, by providing a more direct connection between interior production areas and large seaports, these services would ease traffic on highways and rail lines.
