DPIIT unveils City Logistics Plan for metros to decongest cities and cut logistics costs, advancing sustainability goals.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has launched a ‘City Logistics Plan’ targeting efficient freight and logistics movement in major cities like Delhi and Bengaluru. According to DPIIT Additional Secretary Rajeev Singh Thakur, the initiative aims to reduce urban congestion, cut pollution and logistics costs, and enhance the overall quality of urban life.
Aligned with the National Logistics Policy 2022, this plan supports the government’s Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) agenda and India’s Net Zero carbon emission target by 2070. It provides a framework to address local freight challenges through tailored infrastructure, policies, and collaborations with stakeholders.
Countries like Japan and several European nations have pioneered similar city logistics models, utilising consolidation centers and innovative measures to streamline urban freight. DPIIT views the guideline as a living document, evolving with feedback from stakeholders while assisting states and union territories in implementing city-specific plans.
This initiative promises to advance sustainable urban freight management in India, marking a significant step in logistics transformation.
