Chattogram Port resumes full operations. The state minister for Shipping considers waiving extra container storage fees.
Chattogram Port, Bangladesh’s primary trade gateway, has resumed full-scale container operations after a six-day closure. Container loading, unloading, and delivery are back to normal, with prime movers, trucks, and covered vans active at all 12 gates. Increased efforts are underway to clear the backlog caused by the hiatus.
The port handles 3,500–4,500 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) daily. On July 24, around 3,000 TEUs were delivered, with the number expected to exceed 4,500 TEUs today. Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Md. Omar Faruk confirmed the normalisation of activities and anticipates clearing the extra accumulated containers within a week.
The recent internet blackout forced customs to manually clear containers, causing delays. With internet restoration, customs clearance has returned to normal, accelerating the process.
During a visit to the port, State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury announced that the ministry will consider waiving extra charges incurred due to the delayed container deliveries.
