“The warehousing industry in India has grown rapidly in the last few years,” says Huafreed Nasarwanji, Chief Commercial Officer of Gati. Warehouses have evolved into a technology-driven, operationally organised, and infrastructurally robust storage and distribution space capable of meeting volume-driven and time-sensitive transportation requirements consistently, thanks to the development of the domestic manufacturing sector, the geographical expansion of traditional retail businesses, and the e-commerce boom. The growth of 3PL is also driving demand for warehouses across India.
The deployment of warehouse automation and warehouse management systems has strengthened the competencies and resilience of warehouses. With the deployment of technologies like automated storage and retrieval systems, automated sortation systems, pick-to-light systems, etc., productivity and resource optimisation have significantly increased. The growth of Grade A warehouses in India underlines the rising importance of warehouses across industries in enhancing the cost and operational efficiency of supply chain operations.
Our focus is also firmly on building environmentally sustainable warehouses to reduce the impact of logistics operations on the environment. The use of solar power to illuminate the storage areas, the deployment of vehicles that run on alternative fuels, the introduction of electric forklifts, the optimisation of warehouse design to boost workflow effectiveness, etc. will reduce the carbon footprint.
The growth of the warehousing industry will further gain momentum thanks to the government’s continued focus on developing logistics infrastructure and multimodal connectivity through the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan and National Infrastructure Pipeline.”
