Oil giant BP has decided to halt all oil shipments through the Red Sea, citing a “deteriorating security situation” resulting from Houthi rebel attacks on vessels. The temporary suspension aligns with safety priorities for personnel and affiliated workers.
The Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical route for oil, fuel, and consumer goods shipments, faces increased peril due to Houthi actions. Evergreen Line, one of the world’s largest shipping firms, has also suspended journeys in the region, redirecting container ships around the Cape of Good Hope.
Maersk, MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, and CMA-CGM are among other shipping companies adjusting routes or halting shipments in response to the alarming situation. The international shipping community closely monitors developments, emphasising the need for ongoing assessment amid regional tensions.
