Massive investment to enhance Assam’s inland waterways, boost cargo, tourism, and eco-friendly vessels under new initiatives.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced a ₹4,800 crore investment to transform Assam’s inland waterways at Advantage Assam 2.0 in Guwahati. The initiative aims to modernise river transport, promote tourism, and improve cargo operations.
Under the ‘Harit Nauka’ scheme, ₹1,500 crore will be allocated for transitioning to eco-friendly vessels by 2030. Another ₹1,500 crore is designated for cruise tourism and cargo handling at major terminals along the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers. A ₹375 crore fund will support the expansion of the Pandu ship repair facility.
A world-class Water Metro Service in Guwahati and Dhubri will be developed with a ₹315 crore investment. Additionally, ₹120 crore has been earmarked for a Regional Centre of Excellence in Dibrugarh, while ₹100 crore will fund riverine lighthouses at key locations. The projects aim to make Assam a hub for sustainable river transport and trade.
