Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JN Port) achieved a significant milestone by successfully berthing a vessel at the Shallow Water Berth on August 17, 2023. The new Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative, led by Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal (NSDT), owned by J.M. Baxi group, marks a major step in promoting coastal shipping.
Unmesh Sharad Wagh, Deputy Chairman of JN Port, along with the Head of Departments, welcomed the vessel and its achievement. The PPP agreement, established in May 2023, allows NSDT to operate the Shallow Water Berth and Coastal Berth for a duration of 30 years.
This strategic move facilitates a modal shift in steel product transportation from land to sea, benefitting regions such as Pune and Maharashtra. Anticipating regular shipments of steel from the East Coast and cement from Gujarat, the initiative is expected to reduce congestion and carbon emissions by equivalent to around 2000 trucks on city roads.
Sanjay Sethi, Chairman of JN Port, emphasised the positive impact of this coastal movement on the development of industries in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
