BIMCO launches AUTOSHIPMAN, a standard framework for managing remotely controlled and autonomous vessels.
BIMCO has approved the AUTOSHIPMAN agreement, marking the first standardised management framework for remotely controlled and autonomous ships. The agreement, adopted by BIMCO’s Documentary Committee, provides a contractual structure for third-party ship managers to deliver operational services for these advanced vessels.
The AUTOSHIPMAN agreement is based on the existing SHIPMAN framework and governs the obligations, responsibilities, and liabilities for remotely managed ships. Its flexibility allows ships to switch operational modes mid-voyage, a feature that addresses legal requirements in various jurisdictions.
Currently, remotely controlled ships are mainly used in inland waterways and coastal trades, but their application is expanding as the maritime industry evolves. Captain Ajay Hazari of Anglo Eastern, who led the drafting team, noted the growing commercial use of remotely managed ships, highlighting the agreement’s relevance as more companies enter the sector.
Grant Hunter, BIMCO’s Director of Standard, Innovation, and Research, emphasised that AUTOSHIPMAN is BIMCO’s first step into the commercial operation of remotely controlled and autonomous ships. The agreement was developed with input from legal and insurance experts and incorporates insights from companies already operating remotely managed vessels.
