Uttar Pradesh sets an example for India by extensively incorporating single-use plastic waste and bitumen in road construction, championed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a pioneer in utilising plastic waste, particularly single-use plastic, alongside bitumen for road construction and strengthening. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, this eco-friendly approach not only makes roads cost-effective but also ensures durability, concurrently promoting the proper disposal of single-use plastic waste.
According to Public Works Department statistics, the Yogi government has successfully constructed and reinforced roads spanning 813 kilometers in Uttar Pradesh. A total of 466 roads and routes have been fortified through this innovative process, with an impressive average of one road being constructed daily and a bridge every three days.
India leads globally in adopting plastic waste for road construction, with over 2,500 kilometers of such roads, as per a World Bank Blogs report. The Yogi government’s efforts have contributed significantly, constructing plastic roads totaling 813 kilometers during its term, establishing Uttar Pradesh as a frontrunner in this eco-friendly endeavor.
Beyond plastic roads, the Yogi government is actively enhancing road connectivity and prioritising new infrastructure development. A noteworthy allocation of Rs 200 crore for the removal of 567 black spots on roads is earmarked for the financial year 2023-24. The state is achieving an impressive average of nine kilometers per day for widening and strengthening processes, coupled with the construction of new roads at a commendable rate of 11 kilometers per day.
