Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced a significant push for the development of 25 inland waterways projects in the Northeast, securing funds exceeding Rs 1100 crore.
In a review meeting for his ministries’ ongoing projects in the region, Sonowal directed officials to prioritise critical projects and ensure their completion by January 2024. Of the 25 projects, 15, valued at Rs 850 crore, are allocated for Assam.
The focus includes completing floating jetties at key locations, building permanent jetties, and renovating existing ones. Sonowal also emphasised the dredging of 88 shallow passages on the Brahmaputra for smooth ship navigation. Additionally, the Ministry of Ayush is implementing projects worth Rs 286 crore in the Northeast, with an emphasis on operational efficiency and scaling up initiatives.
The push aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transformative transportation in the region. The Minister aims to inaugurate key Ayush projects, including a Yoga and Naturopathy hospital in Dibrugarh and a new building for the Regional Research Institute of Homoeopathy in Guwahati, by January 2024.
