The European Parliament has approved new legislation aimed at reducing emissions in the aviation sector by increasing the use of sustainable fuels. Under these rules, 2 percent of jet fuel must be sustainable by 2025, rising incrementally to 70 percent by 2050.
Sustainable fuels will encompass synthetic fuels, specific biofuels, recycled jet fuels, and renewable hydrogen, while food crop-based and palm and soy-derived fuels are excluded. Aviation is responsible for 13.9 percent of transportation emissions in the EU, making it the second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the sector after road transport.
The legislation is part of the EU’s “Fit for 55” initiative, aiming to cut emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030, with the EU also pursuing climate neutrality by 2050. These new rules are expected to reduce aircraft carbon emissions significantly.
