The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), operating under the Indian Army, is set to build a 4-kilometer double-lane road in Uttarkashi district, aiming to connect to the Gangotri national highway. This strategic road project is designed to bypass a perilous 21-kilometer stretch at Sukki Top, known for its steep inclines that often pose challenges for vehicles.
Upon completion, the bypass road will serve multiple purposes. It will significantly reduce the distance to the revered Gangotri shrine, one of the Char Dhams, by approximately 10 kilometers, providing easier access for pilgrims. Moreover, it will facilitate the movement of military convoys toward the India-China border in the Nelong Valley.
Currently, a detailed project report (DPR) is in the works, with construction anticipated to commence next year. This project is an integral part of the Char Dham all-weather road initiative.
The Sukki Top segment of the Gangotri national highway is prone to subsidence and landslides. Previous proposals, such as tunnel construction or alterations to sharp bends, were deemed unsuitable for the area’s topography following scientific surveys. Consequently, the BRO opted for a bypass route on the opposite side of the existing highway, which was found to be technically feasible.
