PM Modi launches major infrastructure works in Tamil Nadu, highlights Pamban Bridge and Blue Economy focus

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for rail and road projects worth over ₹8,300 crore in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. Among the key highlights was the inauguration of India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge— the new Pamban Rail Bridge—linking Rameswaram to the mainland. Built at a cost exceeding ₹700 crore, the 2.08 km bridge features 99 spans and a 72.5-metre lift span that enables large ships to pass underneath while ensuring smooth train operations.
The Prime Minister flagged off a new train from Rameswaram to Tambaram and dedicated multiple development initiatives aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and economic growth. Emphasising the region’s spiritual and scientific significance, he called the Pamban Bridge a symbol of tradition and modern engineering.
Modi stressed the central government’s focus on Tamil Nadu’s development, noting a sevenfold increase in the state’s railway budget since 2014. He highlighted rapid infrastructure progress across India, including metro expansions, rural roads, and freight corridors.
Acknowledging Tamil Nadu’s contributions to India’s economy and culture, the Prime Minister underlined the global potential of the state’s Blue Economy and pledged support for the fisheries sector, local industries, and Tamil language promotion. He also urged for medical education in Tamil to empower underprivileged students.
