Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Atal Setu, the longest sea bridge spanning 21.8 kms, connecting Sewri in South Mumbai to Chirle in Uran. Emphasising its significance, PM Modi stated, “The inauguration of Atal Setu exemplifies India’s infrastructural prowess and underscores the country’s trajectory towards a Viksit Bharat (Developed Bharat).
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, or Atal Setu, stands as an infrastructure milestone, reflecting the government’s commitment to economic growth through robust infrastructure. PM Modi dedicated the bridge to Mumbaikars and the nation, acknowledging the contribution of Chhatrapati Shivaji, Mumba Devi, and Siddhivinayak.
Modi expressed gratitude to Japan for their assistance in the project and highlighted the steel used, equivalent to constructing four Hawara Bridges and six Statue of Liberty. Atal Setu, a testament to the aspirations set in 2014, symbolises the message of Viksit Bharat, encompassing services, prosperity, speed, progress, and global connectivity.
Atal Setu, costing over Rs 17,800 crore, consists of a 5.5 km land stretch and a 16.5 km sea span, featuring a six-lane highway with an emergency lane on both sides. The bridge incorporates innovative elements like orthotropic steel decks and interchanges at strategic points. Expecting over 70,000 daily vehicles, Atal Setu aims to reduce travel time from 1.5 hours to just 20 minutes, contributing to Mumbai’s economic and environmental efficiency.
