PM Modi flags off Bihar-made locomotive for Guinea today, marking India’s ₹3,000 Cr foray into global rail exports with 150 units.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially flagged off the first locomotive manufactured at the Marhowrah factory in Bihar on 20 June 2025, destined for export to the Republic of Guinea. This landmark event signals India’s growing capabilities in world-class manufacturing and its emergence as a global hub for locomotive exports.
The Marhowrah facility is set to supply a total of 150 locomotives, valued at more than ₹3,000 crore, for SimFer’s ambitious Simandou iron ore project in Guinea, Africa, over the next three years. According to Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity, Railway Board, 37 locomotives will be delivered in the current financial year, 82 in the next, and the remaining 31 in the third year.
These high-performance locomotives, secured through a global competitive bidding process, are equipped with best-in-class features. They boast air-conditioned cabins, are capable of hauling 100 waggons in pairs at maximum permissible speed, and adhere to stringent emission standards. Crew comfort is paramount, with ergonomic cabins featuring modern amenities like a refrigerator, microwave, and waterless toilet.
Technologically advanced, the locomotives are fitted with a Distributed Power Wireless Control System (DPWCS) for synchronised operations and superior freight handling, positioning the Marhowrah factory as a pivotal player in the international market. The factory itself is a testament to India’s engineering prowess, with broad, standard, and cape gauge tracks laid specifically for the manufacturing of these diverse locomotives.
The ministry emphasised that this export not only aids in building critical infrastructure for Guinea’s largest iron ore project but also significantly strengthens economic ties between India and Africa. “This is a shining example of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ powering global infrastructure through innovation and quality manufacturing,” stated Kumar, expressing optimism for future international orders for Indian firms.
The project is expected to boost local employment and technology transfer, underscoring India’s commitment to self-reliance and global collaboration.
