Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates eco-friendly vessels and jetties, marking a milestone in clean energy and waterway tourism in Varanasi.
In a landmark move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a series of green waterway initiatives in Varanasi, signalling a significant stride in clean energy and tourism development. Among the key highlights of the inauguration ceremony were the dedication of two hybrid electric catamaran vessels—MV Guh and MV Nishadraj—to the nation. These vessels, constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) under the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), boast a seating capacity of 50 passengers each and are powered by fast-charging batteries, promising to slash carbon emissions by 400 metric tons annually.
Furthermore, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for 13 community jetties along National Waterways 1 (NW 1) in Varanasi and NW 110 in Mathura and Prayagraj, underscoring the government’s commitment to bolstering inland water transport infrastructure. The inauguration also witnessed the unveiling of the Quick Pontoon Opening Mechanism System (QPOMS), a revolutionary technology aimed at streamlining waterway traffic and reducing logistical bottlenecks.
These initiatives align closely with the Harit Nauka Guidelines, championed by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW), which advocate for the adoption of green vessels and the establishment of a sustainable maritime ecosystem. Additionally, they reflect the government’s broader vision outlined in the Maritime India Vision (MIV) and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which prioritise the expansion of inland water transport and the promotion of eco-friendly maritime practices.
PM Modi’s unwavering dedication to environmental sustainability and infrastructure development underscores India’s commitment to fostering a greener, more connected future for all. As the nation marches forward on its path towards harnessing clean energy and promoting responsible tourism, these initiatives mark a monumental step forward in realising that vision.
