During the Diwali festivities, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) witnessed a substantial surge in cargo volumes, handling an impressive 5,600 metric tonnes. This marked a remarkable increase of 2,500 metric tonnes compared to the previous Diwali season.
The e-commerce sector emerged as the frontrunner, recording an impressive 87 percent year-on-year growth in cargo volumes. Mumbai International Airport (MIAL) attributes this surge to the increasing popularity of online shopping, particularly during festive occasions. Another notable category during the festive season was ‘gifts & samples,’ witnessing a 36 percent year-on-year increase, accompanied by heightened demand for perishable items such as flowers and sweets.
In terms of cargo distribution, domestic shipments dominated, constituting 56 percent of the overall growth, with international cargo contributing the remaining 44 percent. The top destinations were London for international shipments and Delhi for domestic cargo, with significant contributions from other key cities like Hyderabad and Bengaluru. MIAL highlights consistent year-on-year surges in cargo shipments to Delhi, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad during the Diwali season.
