Maersk and Bahrain ministries partner to launch a ship recycling project in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Maersk has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications and Ministry of Industry and Commerce to evaluate and establish a ship recycling initiative in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The signing ceremony included project partners such as the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (ASRY), SULB Company, and APM Terminals Bahrain, a Maersk subsidiary and operator of Khalifa Bin Salman Port.
The ministries will offer regulatory support to ASRY, which will be responsible for equipping the yard and docks for the ship recycling process. Maersk will act as the technical and operational advisor, ensuring sustainable practices and adherence to responsible standards in ship recycling. SULB will process and recycle the steel obtained from the ship recycling for both local and international markets. Ahmed Hassan, Senior Vice President and Head of Asset Strategy at Maersk, highlighted the company’s Responsible Ship Recycling Standards (RSRS), which exceed the guidelines set by the IMO’s Hong Kong Convention. He expressed optimism that the MoU would accelerate responsible ship recycling in Bahrain, positively impacting the economy and creating jobs.
