International airport status opens the door to direct import and export operations for Southern Tamil Nadu, reducing dependence on Chennai for international cargo movement.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the declaration of Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu as an International Airport on 10th March 2026, a significant milestone for one of South India’s most historically and commercially important cities.
Madurai Airport is one of the oldest airports in Tamil Nadu and serves as a crucial gateway to Southern Tamil Nadu, playing a pivotal role in promoting tourism, pilgrimage and regional economic growth. Elevating the airport to international status is expected to enhance regional connectivity, promote trade and drive economic development in the region.
For the cargo and logistics industry, the development opens the door to direct international air connectivity for Southern Tamil Nadu, a region with a strong manufacturing base in textiles, engineering goods, auto components and agri-produce. International status will enable direct import and export operations, reducing dependence on Chennai for international cargo and creating new logistics opportunities across the region.
The announcement aligns with the broader national push to decentralise international aviation infrastructure beyond metro hubs and carries particular relevance for South India’s growing air cargo ecosystem.
