Piyush Goyal launches first logistics cost assessment, providing clarity on efficiency and competitiveness.

India’s logistics cost has been formally estimated at 7.97% of GDP, according to the Assessment of Logistics Cost in India report launched by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal in New Delhi. Prepared by NCAER for DPIIT, the study applies a hybrid methodology combining secondary data with nationwide surveys, providing a uniform and evidence-based framework for measuring logistics costs.
The report highlights costs across different transport modes, product categories, and firm sizes, along with estimates of freight per tonne-kilometre. It underscores the role of multimodal logistics in enhancing efficiency and lowering business expenses.
Goyal said the findings will guide data-driven reforms and complement initiatives such as the National Logistics Policy, PM GatiShakti, Dedicated Freight Corridors, and Sagarmala.
By establishing a reliable benchmark, the report addresses inconsistencies from earlier fragmented estimates and reinforces India’s efforts to become a globally competitive logistics hub.
