Jaishankar highlights India’s MAHASAGAR vision at G7, urging stronger Indo-Pacific cooperation and secure maritime trade routes.

At a conference of G7 foreign ministers in Canada on Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke about Indo-Pacific cooperation and presented India’s vision for a secure and resilient marine domain. The meeting’s main focus was on guaranteeing safe and open waterways, which are essential to international trade and economic stability.
In a social media post, Jaishankar claimed to have attended the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) Outreach Session on Maritime Security and Prosperity, where he highlighted India’s strategy for maritime security through its port-led development projects, Indo-Pacific collaboration, and MAHASAGAR perspective.
He emphasised India’s position as a “first responder in the maritime domain” and stated that through cooperative drills and logistics agreements, New Delhi aims to fortify humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) partnerships in the Indo-Pacific.
Additionally, he emphasised the “central role of resilient ports and secure waterways in securing our collective agenda” and the significance of maritime trade to both domestic and global prosperity in an increasingly globalised world.
“UNCLOS must be upheld,” Jaishankar said, underlining India’s commitment to a rules-based maritime order.
An international agreement that provides a legal basis for all maritime and marine operations is the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Jaishankar is in Niagara to attend an outreach workshop with the G7 partner nations.
He had previously met with Prince Faisal bin Farhan of Saudi Arabia to discuss energy, connectivity, regional hotspots, and bilateral ties.
